Beats Music Acquires Music Marketing And Monetization Company Topspin Media

Beats Music, the streaming music service recently launched by the similarly-named headphone company, just announced that it has acquired Topspin Media.

The companies were already connected — as Beats Music CEO Ian Rogers notes in a blog post, he was CEO of Topspin before leaving to run Beats Music last year.

They also announced a partnership in February, where Topspin’s ArtistLink platform allows musicians to sell merchandise and tickets to Beats Music subscribers.

“The acquisition brings a team of talented people who have spent years working on building and fine-tuning the artist-to-fan connection into the Beats Music experience,” Rogers writes. “Topspin + Beats Music combines music discovery and direct relationships between artists and fans in a revolutionary way.”

Topspin was launched back in 2008. In January, the company laid off 14 employees (about 44 percent of its staff).

Topspin has a blog post about the deal as well, which discusses the impact on its existing customers. There will be no immediate change, the post says, the ultimate plan is to further integrate ArtistLink with Beats Music while “both Topspin and Beats Music will look for a strategic partner to operate and run the popular email and commerce services in the Topspin Platform.”

Neither blog post discusses the financial terms of the deal. I’ve emailed Beats Music and will update if I hear back.
