Foundation: Chad Hurley Talks Collaborative Social Content and Hints at a New Video Platform

In the next episode of my Foundation series, I talk with Chad Hurley, co-founder of YouTube, and founder of AVOS (a Google Ventures portfolio company).

Chad talks about life after YouTube, hints at his latest ambition in the video collaboration space and recalls one very important breakfast meeting at Denny’s.

Chad’s thoughts on the future of social collaboration:

How do we help people create better content? I don’t think that part has been solved…I don’t think the creation side has really been cracked….I feel like there should be better ways for people to collaborate, because right now social memes are selfish. People share really for themselves. In the spectrum of social, it’s about your self image, it’s not collaborative. And what keeps people from sharing things is being concerned about how they’re going to be judged.

The new stuff I’m thinking about is how do you remove the identity from some of the things that have been going on today with social? And how do you combine people so it allows them to work together in more collaborative ways? It’s not about the individual, it’s about the content they create.

We’re working on some new concepts. I wish this conference took place maybe a month later….We’re working on some ideas about how people could collaboratively work together to create better content. I call it structured storytelling. That’s the stuff I’m thinking about.
