Open Source Microblogging Startup StatusNet Lands More Funding

StatusNet, the startup behind the open source microblogging server with the same name, has taken on additional investment led by New York-based FirstMark Capital and joined by BOLDstart Ventures, iNovia Capital and Montreal Start Up.

Founder of open source ad platform OpenX, angel investor and FirstMark Capital partner Scott Switzer will join the StatusNet board.

The fresh round brings StatusNet’s total investment to date to $2.3 million.

Evan Prodromou, founder and CEO of StatusNet, says the company is currently building an enterprise sales and support team to further push its software into the Global 1,000 market.

Using its solutions, companies can set up new communication and collaboration systems inside corporate firewalls. StatusNet plug-ins can integrate with other enterprise applications, and gives companies a way to keep their mobile workforces connected (Motorola uses their software for “internal social communications”).

StatusNet is also the foundation for ‘open source Twitter’ identi.ca.
