East coast is the best coast
David Pogue mentioned in his review of That Device that AT&T’s 3G coverage here in the U.S. is still a little spotty. This handy map—the blue coloring shows where you’ll find 3G coverage—shows exactly where you’ll be able to use the high-speed network. Most big cities are covered, as you might expect.
Those of you in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming can forget about 3G for now, though. AT&T doesn’t so much as provide 3G in a single one of those states’ cities.
Keep in mind that AT&T says it’s expanding 3G coverage every day, so it’s not like currently non-3G locations will be without it forever.
I’m currently in Dutchess County, NY, and there’s sure as hell no 3G coverage up here, and we’re only about 70 miles north of New York City. Why, then, should someone up here wait on a line for That Device, which then only offers GPS as a new feature? The real hotness, as we all know, is the new firmware and App Store, which can be used on the original version of That Device (and iPod touch for $10).
